Releasing Tension in Your Neck Area

April 15, 2024

In this brief excerpt from the online course “Face Yoga for Profound Tension Release,” Nadiia demonstrates an exercise for neck relaxation, which also targets the release of tension from the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Why is this muscle crucial, and what benefits come from knowing how to relax it?

The sternocleidomastoid is a prominent muscle in the neck that runs from the sternum (sterno) and clavicle (cleido) to the mastoid process of the temporal bone behind the ear. It has two heads: the sternal head and the clavicular head. This muscle plays a crucial role in various movements of the head and neck, including rotation and flexion.

Releasing tension in the sternocleidomastoid muscle is important for several reasons:

1. Pain Relief: Tension in the sternocleidomastoid can cause pain and discomfort in the neck, head, and even the face. Releasing this tension can alleviate these symptoms and improve overall comfort.

2. Head and Neck Mobility: Tightness in the sternocleidomastoid can restrict the range of motion in the head and neck. By releasing tension in this muscle, you can restore proper mobility and flexibility, making everyday movements easier and more comfortable.

3. Posture Improvement: The sternocleidomastoid is involved in maintaining proper posture, particularly of the head and neck. Tension in this muscle can contribute to poor posture, leading to issues like forward head posture. Releasing tension can help correct postural imbalances and promote better alignment.

4. Reduced Headaches: Tension in the neck muscles, including the sternocleidomastoid, is a common trigger for tension headaches. By releasing tension in these muscles through massage or stretching, you can potentially reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

5. Relief from TMJ Dysfunction: Tension in the sternocleidomastoid can contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, which can cause pain and limited mobility in the jaw. Releasing tension in this muscle can help alleviate TMJ-related symptoms.
